Padmasana

(Lotus Pose)

(pod-MAHS-anna)

padma = lotus

Buddha routinely used this greatly revered asana as a position for meditation and breathing because it enhances concentration.

Benefits
Calms the brain and stimulates the pelvis, spine, abdomen, and bladder. Stretches the ankles and knees while easing menstrual discomfort and sciatica. Consistent practice of this pose until late into pregnancy is said to help ease childbirth. Traditional texts say that Padmasana destroys all disease and awakens kundalini.

Partnering
Partnering in this pose grounds the base of the spine and groin area, this is the animal or base nature. It is also taste and smell. The Root chakra (base of the spine) is associated with adrenals, kidneys, muscles and arterial blood.

Sharing this pose manifests strongly the motivation to ensure personal survival by way of food, rest, and sexual expression. Spiritually, the base chakra has to do with protection of individual integrity. It is an energy center that provides a solid ground from which to establish our equilibrium in order to ascend to higher awareness.

Dividing this root amongst two links two yogis to the physical world, solidity and support - especially to the physical body. It is the foundation of energy.
